No morirá un rey…
Beatriz Laffita
A King Will Not Die…
Beatriz Laffita
It is a not inconsiderable clue that the title of the last personal exhibition of the young plastic artist Dayron Gallardo, Muere un rey entre fuentes y jardines, is a verse from the Poema de los dones (Poem of the gifts) by Jorge Luis Borges. Thus, doubts are dispelled and the artist’s intention is clear: to know, understand, apprehend… everything that surrounds him, everything with which he interacts and everything that raises visceral questions. And in that perennial research, his creative activity has become an instrument to scrutinize what worries him: first, dehumanization, or rather that inflection point where those values that make us human beings are lost -worked with a language full of codes in the series I am not an animal-; and then, the search for that higher stage where trifles of all kinds are relegated -addressed in the series Horizons of Light-.
Both interests come from intensely lived personal experiences, as can be seen in a dialogue with Dayron; therefore, it could be said that we are in the presence of a deeply self-referential work. However, unlike other creators who make use of this strategy, his own experience is not an identifiable motif in the piece, but the trigger. It also draws on themes that man has approached from multiple angles: the existence of God and the soul, he wonders what love is and questions what is understood as beautiful. Thus, it should not surprise us that the study of philosophy, more than an accompaniment, constitutes a complement to inquiries of a purely pictorial nature. He likes to express the results in this respect through series; which, in his case, do not imply the closing of a stage or inquiry. They are rather stages that need to be saved and give meaning to the conceptual and aesthetic investigations that he undertakes, not only as a working method, but also as part of the creative process.
Having said all this, we could then affirm that his work explores the paths of spirituality. And precisely this intention justifies the abandonment of the figurative. Thus, the scenes full of characters, at the beginning of his career, were gradually stripped of the anecdotal in order to give way to a panorama where the protagonism was shared by small figures -hybrids where the natural reference refused to disappear completely- and pictorial elements, among which the expressive use of color and the work with textures stood out.
Both have acquired greater weight in the most recent series, Far Horizons, which was presented to the public in the aforementioned exhibition held at the Casa 8 Gallery between June and August of this year. In it, abstraction has triumphed with plenitude and the winks to identifiable elements have been left behind. Now the lucubrations that the artist shares with us are predominant: thoughts to which he seems to want to give form so that we can grasp them. The sculptural vocation that the paintings have acquired could respond to this desire, in part, since the stretcher and canvas have gone beyond the role of mere support to become an intrinsic part of the final creation. This procedure also reveals his training as an engraver, since it could be said that the treatment of these two components is similar to that which the matrix receives during engraving.
It is enough to dedicate a few minutes to the contemplation of the works that make up the latest series and it will be corroborated that hermeticity is something that will not be found in Dayron’s production. This not only responds to the premise that has been imposed to share the transformation that throughout his still short career has been experiencing, but also to the way in which the fusion of brushstrokes, nuances and wefts that form a peculiar map inside the canvas, make us glimpse the importance of the dialogic pairs that give balance to our existence, communicate different states. To them, in addition, it leads us through the incorporation of sound (music used during the creative process and that now, in a certain way, works as a complement to the finished piece). A subtle mechanism that, while offering us handles, guides us through his unique «garden»: a remote place in time and space, which refers to those equally distant moments where certain moral values were unshakable, where the nobility of the human being was always victorious. And this young artist will surely be victorious if he keeps study and experimentation as fundamental premises. He still has a long way to go, but he is not groping: Dayron is certain of the state/place he wishes to reach.
